What Is CBD and What Is It Good For?

Health

Even over the internet, you may notice how CBD seems to have been gaining popularity lately. The term it stands for, cannabidiol, can have people thinking of marijuana or cannabis. Some might even think that a CBD store sells pot (which, to be fair, has been legalized and can be purchased in some places without fear of prosecution). But what is CBD anyway, and why are people buying products that have CBD in them? Here is an overview on what CBD is and what it can be good for.

What is CBD?

The cannabis or marijuana plant has various chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. Cannabidiol, the compound popularly known as CBD, is one of these compounds. Another cannabinoid, called tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, is the chemical component which has the psychoactive properties that are mainly responsible for the “high” caused by the consumption of marijuana. Unlike THC, CBD does not cause intoxication and has no psychoactive effects. Some people turn to CBD for the pain relief and soothing effects associated with cannabis, but without its psychedelic effects.

For most of the CBD products that appear to be gaining the attention of consumers, CBD comes in the form of oil. Some states have not yet legalized the use of recreational marijuana, so in those states, CBD oil is usually derived from hemp plants. By the way, hemp. or cannabis sativa, is one of the two plants that are smoked as marijuana, the other being cannabis indica.

What can CBD be used for?

As of June 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially approved the use of CBD for epilepsy and seizures. However, many CBD users are claiming that the chemical has a lot of other health benefits. Here are some uses CBD is supposedly good for.

Pain relief – Our bodies have a system called the endocannabinoid system which helps regulate sleep, pain, appetite and even how our immune system responds to threats. Cannabinoids, such as CBD, could interact with this system, thereby reducing chronic pain and inflammation.

Improving rest and sleep quality – Since the endocannabinoid system also helps with sleep, interactions between CBD and this system could help people rest and sleep better.

Reducing anxiety and depression – CBD is also known to affect the serotonin receptors of the brain, which may help improve a person’s mood and social behavior.

Alleviating symptoms related to cancer – Cancer-related pain can be reduced by consuming CBD. Chemotherapy may also induce nausea and vomiting which CBD can alleviate.

Lowering of blood pressure – Stress and anxiety are commonly related to high blood pressure. Since CBD helps reduce stress and anxiety, many users say that it may also be used to help lower blood pressure.

Although it is proven to be an effective medication against seizures, all the other claims still require further research to confirm. So if you are thinking of using CBD for any sort of ailment other than seizures, you might want to look into the product’s properties thoroughly before you decide whether or not you really want to try it.
