3M Masking Tape Types and Benefits

The adhesive applied to masking tape can make a significant difference in masking situations. Three main types of adhesives have various chemical properties, with rubber-based adhesives having the lowest temperature resistance and the highest adhesion.

Acrylic-based tapes are a good option for longer-term use because of their increased temperature resistance, while silicone-based tapes can be used intermittently up to 500 degF. Here are some tips for selecting the best masking tape for your project.

3M ™ General Purpose kreppband (masking tape)has a pressure-sensitive adhesive and a crepe-paper backing. This combination makes for instant adhesion, making this tape a good solution for entry-level paint applications. While it is not ideal for high-end paint applications, it is good for basic projects, as it provides excellent adhesion and holds edges cleanly. And it can last for years, thanks to its waterproof design.

Masking tape has the best adhesive strength of any type of tape, but it can still be a hassle to remove if necessary. The adhesive remains on surfaces even after the tape is removed, so be aware of this before using it on a painted surface. Masking tape can also pull paint off walls and damage other surfaces. This can be frustrating if you already painted a surface, as you will have to go back and touch it up again.

While masking tape is easy to remove and can stick to almost any surface, painter’s tape is made of more durable materials and is more effective for permanent repairs. Unlike masking tape, painter’s tape is more expensive and has a low adhesive strength. However, it can leave behind a layer of paint when it’s removed. You can buy these products at most home improvement stores, including hardware stores. And they’re both available online and in stores.

Nitto masking tape is great for corners because of its thin adhesive layer. The tape also has a general crepe texture, allowing for more stretching. However, be careful when dumping tape rolls, as you could cause the edges to rip. Lastly, 3M’s 3mm and 6mm Fine Line tapes have excellent edges, but don’t go around corners. These types of tape can be trimmed to smaller widths if you need to.

Foam masking tape is made with polyurethane foam material. It is made in a circle shape to fill in gaps and create a barrier against paint leaking. Its hot-melt adhesive is water-resistant, acid-base and fat-based-resistant, making it an excellent choice for sealing rounded corners. But remember to check your product’s water-based paint compatibility before using it. There are also some things you should know about foam masking tape.

The difference between painter’s tape and masking tape is typically only noticeable when comparing the prices of the two types of tape. Masking tape is a lot less expensive than painter’s tape, so if you’re not going to be painting, you might want to go with masking tape instead.

But don’t be fooled by the distinction; masking tape is the superior choice when it comes to painting and holding things together. Only if you are working on a significant project will there be an increase in price.
