White house supports Alberta/Texas pipeline

A report prepared for the White House supports the idea of an oil pipeline from the Alberta oilsands to Texas.
The report says the 3,000-kilometre pipeline could substantially reduce American dependency on oil from the Middle East and other regions.
The report, by Massachusetts firm EnSys Energy and Systems, was completed December 23rd. It was made public this week.
The project’s developer, Calgary-based TransCanada Pipelines, says the pipeline would improve U.S. energy security and reduce dependence on foreign. TransCanada CEO Russ Girling says it would create 20,000 high-paying jobs in the U.S. and inject $20 billion into the U.S. economy.
But. environmental groups, like the Natural Resources Defense Council, call the pipeline an ecological disaster waiting to happen. Activists plan to gather across from the White House Friday to protest the project as Prime Minister Stephen Harper meets with President Barack Obama. They are expected to talk about clean energy, but it’s uncertain whether the pipeline will be on the agenda.
