Washington Gets Plastered With “Ethical Oil”
Media Releases | Freedom From Oil | April 20, 2011
Thousands of posters in U.S. cities aim to show the hypocrisy of Canada’s claims about “Ethical Oil.”
WASHINGTON, D.C.—(April 20, 2011) – The Rainforest Action Network and its allies are stepping-up action against Canada’s Tar Sands in the U.S. capital, putting up 1000 posters in Washington D.C. around Capital Hill, downtown and along K-Street (the famous lobbyist corridor), with plans to expand to other cities including New York, Chicago, Minneapolis and Portland.
“The Harper government has lost its grip on reality and needs an intervention,” said Brant Olson, Director of the Freedom From Oil Campaign. “Calling the tar sands “ethical oil” shows just how far Canada’s ethical standards have fallen. Canada should stop blocking clean energy legislation abroad and begin reigning in the corrupting influence of its oil industry.”
Featuring a range of graphic images including dead ducks and tailings ponds, the posters lead with the headline, “Ethical Oil? The Canadian government seems to think so.”
For many Americans, the posters represent a first impression of the Tar Sands, which are still relatively unknown south of the border.
