The six-member panel has 60 days to prepare a report for Environment Minister Jim Prentice on the state of environmental research and monitoring in the region.
The Tories struck the panel amid concerns that people living downstream of the Alberta oil sands are becoming sick, getting cancer and catching deformed, tumour-addled fish.
Those concerns brought Hollywood director James Cameron to the oil sands this week to talk to scientists, oil executives and Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach.
Members of the panel are Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Dr. Peter Dillon, Dr. Subhasis Ghoshal, Dr. Andrew Miall, Dr. Joseph Rasmussen and Dr. John Smol.
The group’s findings will be posted on Environment Canada’s website.
