A shop assistant is to douse themselves in oil while draped in a Canadian flag to protest against environmentally-destructive tar sand oil.

A Lush Cosmetics worker was set to perform the stunt with sticky molasses from one of its shower gels at the Kingston store at noon on Thursday as part of a nationwide campaign against the strip-mining of Canadian forests.

Campaigns manager Sean Gifford said: “Our addiction to oil is driving us to desperate measures.

“When it comes to tar sands, we are scraping the bottom of the barrel and this oil is on its way to Europe if we don’t stop it.”

The cosmetics chain said it had moved to distance itself from tar oil by demanding delivery truck companies do not use fuel derived from tar sand.
