Just to clarify from the get-go, this is entirely a hoax, though one that’s gotten a lot of attention from both The Hobbit fans and environmental activists. Apparently, a fake company known as Black Flood Productions put together a video with video and sound clips of Peter Jackson, making it appear that Tar Sands, Alberta was going to be a filming location for Mordor scenes in the upcoming Hobbit movies.
A little investigative effort quickly proved this entire claim as false. Melissa Booth, a publicist for The Hobbit, stated:
I can confirm that it is a fictional clip cobbled together from other things Peter has done. There is no truth to the claim that we plan to film in this area.
Another big indicator that this isn’t true is the fact that the land of Mordor isn’t ever seen in The Hobbit book. Though some fans might point to other elements Peter Jackson has fiddled with in the canon—such as the recently confirmed return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas, despite the character not being in the original story.
The purpose behind this false claim coming up in the first place is a bit unclear. Most say it’s an anti-Alberta, anti-oil company campaign. It got a good bit of attention across the Facebook and Twitter realms, but now that the truth is out about the nonexistent company, the highly edited video, and the simple truth as revealed by The Hobbit PR team, let’s hope this rumor doesn’t get any more out of hand.
