Film director James Cameron asked industry officials questions about their environmental record and plans for reducing carbon emissions during the first full day of his tour of the Alberta oilsands.
Cameron arrived in Alberta on Monday night for a personal fact-finding tour.
The Canadian-born director and producer of Avatar spent Tuesday morning on a private tour of mining operations.
Cameron had plenty of questions for industry officials, the CBC’s Briar Stewart reported. Alberta’s environment minister, Rob Renner, was also present for the tour.
Cameron was to spend the afternoon in Fort Chipewyan, a small First Nations community in northern Alberta, which is located downstream from oilsands operations.
On Wednesday, Cameron will meet with Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach.
At a UN forum in New York City earlier this year, Cameron called the oilsands a “black eye” on Canada’s image as an environmental leader.
Those comments prompted Stelmach to invite Cameron to come to Alberta to see the oilsands for himself.
