MONTREAL — A dozen Greenpeace activists wearing bathing suits and covered in molasses intended to resemble crude oil held up their hands like stop signs in the business district of Montreal last month. Before a growing crowd of onlookers, they slowly circled the bronze fountain sculpture in Place Jean-Paul Riopelle and smeared their sticky fingers across a banner that read, “Too dirty, too risky. Go beyond oil.”

The performance kicked off an afternoon of peaceful demonstrations by 400 advocates outside the city’s Palais des Congrès convention center, where 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries were gathered for the 21st World Energy Congress.

The five-day conference brought together representatives from private industry, government and academia to tackle global energy issues, from the improvement of energy access to the role of renewable resources, and it opened with activists taking to the streets.
