EDMONTON — Pembina Pipeline Corp. is reporting a leak in its oil pipeline in the Swan Hills area, about 100 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

Cleanup crews are at the site. No details are available, but there has been a media report that about 1,000 barrels have been spilled.

“We have a field inspector at the site who is reporting back. We should have more information soon,” said Energy Resources Conservation Board spokesman Darin Barter.

“Our responsibility is to ensure the company is responding to the incident. The spill co-operative crew is at the site now,” he said.

If the spill turns out to be at the level reported — about 1,000 barrels — that would be a relatively small incident.

The Rainbow pipeline, owned by Plains Midstream Canada, spilled 28,000 barrels into the marsh about 30 kilometres from the First Nations community of Little Buffalo in May. That was the largest spill in Alberta in three decades.
